The Huntingdonshire Cyclist Battalions

William Mould.

William Mould served in the H C B with the service number 290248 - he was from Thorpe and born in 1891 and enlisting at the Battalion Headquarters in St. Mary's Street, Huntingdon on the 5th December 1914. He served in the Reserve [ 2/1st ] and was known to have been in both B & D Companies. He was later sent to France and served in the 4th Battalion Bedford Regiment.
Available records indicate that he was both a Lance Sergeant and Sergeant in the HCB - his rank in the Bedford's was that of a Corporal.
Under part 2 of Battalion orders 41, signed by H. Wootton officer commanding 2/1st Huntingdonshire Cyclist Battalion (Captain and adjutant) on behalf of Lieut. Col. J. L. Stanley. V. D. Commanding Officer 2nd Hunts. Cyclist Battalion, issued at Whitby on 22nd. March 1915, orders being for the following day i.e. 23rd March 1915, records indicate that Pte. W. Mould (1076) of H Company to be appointed Paid Lance Corpl. to date 17-3-1915.
Corporal W. Mould (1076) - under part 1 of Battalion orders 101, signed by Captain J. C. S. Musk, officer commanding 2/1st Huntingdonshire Cyclist Battalion (Captain and adjutant) issued at 5.00p.m. from Sutton-le-Marsh, Lincolnshire on 3rd May 1916, orders being for the following day i.e. 4th May 1916, records indicate that he was of A Company and was to be appointed unpaid Provisional Lance Sergeant from 4-5-1916.
L/Sergt W. Mould 290248 - Under Battalion orders 293, issued by Lieut. Col. J. L. Barkley V. D., officer commanding 2/1st Huntingdonshire Cyclist Battalion issued at Vine cottage, Chapel St. Leonards, Alford, Lincs. on 11th December 1916 at 6:00 p.m., and signed by W. J. Satchell (Captain and Adjutant), orders being for the following day i.e. 12 December 1916 (Ref: 151), records indicate that he was a reserve person who placed under orders to proceed overseas and if he was holding an acting rank he was to revert to his substantive rank before proceeding overseas. At the time he was in B company with the 2/1st HCB based on the Lincolnshire coast.
Sergeant W. Mould (290248) - Under part 1 of Battalion orders 127, issued at The Vine Cottage, Chapel St. Leonards, Lincs. on 29th May 1917 at 6-30pm., and signed by H. B. Moss Blundell, ( 2l/t and acting Adjutant), orders being for the following day, records indicate that he qualified at the 38th Rifle and Lewis Gun Course at Strensall with distinction - at the time he was in D Company.
Under Battalion orders 242, issued by Lieut. Col. M. D. Barkley, officer commanding 2/1st Huntingdonshire Cyclist Battalion issued at Vine cottage, Chapel St. Leonards, Alford, Lincs. on 12th October 1917 at 6:30 p.m., and signed by W. J. Satchell (Captain and Adjutant), orders being for the following day i.e. 13th October 1917, records indicate that he was granted proficiency pay class 1 instead of class 2 from 19/5/1917, at the time he was a lance sergeant in D company of the 2/1st. Huntingdonshire Cyclist Battalion stationed on the Lincolnshire coast.
He was placed under orders to proceed (as a reserve) overseas with B Company,12 December 1917, Order dated 12 December 1917, Vine cottage Chapel St. Leonards, signed by Lt. Col. J. L Barclay V. D. If he held a acting rank then he was to revert to his substantive rank before proceeding overseas. (In an order raised at 7.00 pm, Vine Cottage, Chapel St. Leonards, on 5 March 1917 by W. L Stephenson, Lieut. and acting Adjt. (2.1), He held the existing rank of Sergeant in D company (2.1) . His new substantive rank was to be Corporal and was effective from 14/10/1915. This order was issued under The Army Council Instruction No.115 of 1917. ref 156/2) (In an order raised at The George Hotel, Alford, Lieut. Col. J. L. Stanley issued order No. 90 part 2 Territorials (2.1) on 17 April 1917 indicating that he was appointed paid Lance Sergeant to 16 April 1917. At the time he was serving as a Corp. in D company (2.1) for rations, accommodation and discipline. ref 158/2.) (In Battalion orders no. 242 part 2 raised at 6.00 pm, Vine Cottage, Chapel St. Leonards, by Lieut. Col. M. D. Barkley, 2.1 H. C. B. on 13 October 1917, he was granted proficiency pay class 1 instead of class 2. This was from 19/5/1917 and at the time he was in D company) .

Acting Sergeant W. Mould - 290248 - Under Battalion orders, [part 2] issued by Lieut. Col. M. D. Barkley, officer commanding 2/1st Huntingdonshire Cyclist Battalion issued at Beechlands, Skegness on 11th August 1918, and signed by W. J. Satchell (Captain and Adjutant), on 10th August 1918 at 2-0 p.m., [Territorials] records indicate that he was posted to the 3rd Bedford Regiment on the 10/8/1918 and therefore struck off the strength of the Battalion. At the time he was attached to D company. [Authority - 0.1c no. 2 Records Warley, 4/57/34 dated 6/8/1918].
